李阳疯狂英语在20世纪90年代中期开始流行。在阐述了“一个典型的中国人学习英语的故事”以及“英语学习者的痛苦心声”之后,李阳提出了自己的疯狂英语解决方案。疯狂英语的学习理念是,首先要有疯狂的学习精神和若干导致"疯狂"的技巧,其次是以口语和句子为中心的学习方法(如"三最口腔训练","一口气训练")。疯狂英语的学习精神是值得称道的,其实质就是学习者必须进入某种状态,即自我营造一个学习的环境。至于以句子为中心,其用意有两个。一方面是将语法规则等规律性的东西(即语言的形式)和某些典型句子的内容绑定,而不是直接对语言形式进行记忆。这样,在记忆语言的形式时,就有了固定的参照内容,从而易于记住语言的形式。另一方面,这些句子表达了某些典型的场景或思想,记住它就记住了语言的内容。

疯狂英语受到了很多人的欢迎。它激发了中国人学习英语的热情,指出了许多学习者的误区,提出了很多好的学习理念。但是,疯狂英语提出的解决方案,依然存在某些局限。其一是,尽管很多人都承认"疯狂"的重要性,但由于性格、环境等诸多问题的限制,要长久地保持"疯狂"的状态是十分困难的。疯狂英语的本质,是希望依靠激情来消除人的惰性,或者说改变某些人的性格。其二,疯狂英语搜集了许多典型的流行句子,但这些句子之间缺乏有机的联系。要把这么多缺乏联系的、缺乏现实应用环境的句子记住,是困难的。尽管疯狂英语也提出了意境想像的概念,但这种意境想像的随意性大,难以稳定、清晰和持久。后面的文章会谈到,就背诵大量单句而言,即使是有快速记忆法的支持,也很困难。因此,许多人在坚持了一段不长的时间后,就放弃了。第三,疯狂英语提出的一些关于英语学习的理念,仍有待于众多学习者的检验。例如,关于不用大块时间学习英语的说法。学习者必须意识到自己在性格、环境、工作性质、学习目的和时间上的诸多限制,理性地运用这些学习理念和方法。以下是一篇关于疯狂英语的评论文章,比较中肯。

“疯狂英语”是一位年轻拳击手,教育专家们苦苦摸索了几十年的传统教育手段在李阳的嬉笑怒骂中简直不堪一击。去年,李阳亲临包括首经贸在内的北京各大学府讲学,于是在众多学子心目中,英语的传统学习方法老了:“疯狂英语”不需笔记,不需逐课练习,只需大声背诵,强化刺激听和说,要的只是毅力。

  诚然,无论应试还是应用,语言学习的听和说是关键的一环。而李阳在其听说记忆、练习的方法上确有其独到的一面。但是,只以听说的疯狂训练带动整个英语学习的做法未必科学。“嘴上要练出美国肌肉来”的想法未免有些天真。

  李阳给了我们几百个句子法宝,许诺以“三最法” (最大声、最快速、最清晰)脱口而出便可达到英语学习的高境界。但我翻来看去,总以为其知识覆盖面仍不及我们英语基础的典范《英语九百句》。何况,英语世界的固定搭配浩如烟海,岂是区区几百句所能概括得了的?

  我们不妨暂且读一则小故事:相传少林寺有位老住持,膝下两个弟子。师弟聪慧无比,把老住持的所有武功套路都学到了手,但不愿吃苦,虽然练得精彩绝伦,但总达不到武学的高境界。而另一位弟子天生愚钝,从小到大只学会了一招,十几年如一日,只是苦练不已。后来,师哥把这一招练到了出神入化的地步,终于胜过了他的师弟,一招震天下,成为少林的一代宗师。

  而看过了这则故事,你有没有想到李阳呢?有没有想到李阳便像这位毅力非凡的师哥呢?想当年,英语成绩不及格的李阳便是三年如一日在兰州大学的校园里狂喊不已,成为一代“脱口秀”的。于是我们没有理由不相信,一招可以得天下。

  那么好了,愚笨的师哥完全可以著书立说,然后宣布:一切武学尽废,天下习武之人只练我这一招即可,练不好是你们毅力不够。

  哪有这样的道理!普天下之下百人有百性,每个人的客观环境又不尽相同,而要求以偏盖全,岂不悲哉!我们没有故事中的师弟那么聪明,又没有师哥那么愚笨,把两者结合起来学习不是更加完美?学习李阳的精神,加上我们的全面,英语学习何以不克?其实,我们也怪不了李阳,自己经验的局限以及追求经济效益的热情使他无法停止向我们做宣传。而我们,是不是也应向李阳那样,找到一个适合自己的学习方法呢?

 

第一拿手好戏:社交性寒暄的全面总结
